PS VR2 Gets Controller-Free Hand Tracking Feature

At the Siggraph Asia 2024 conference in Tokyo, Sony Group Corp. (NYSE:SONY) introduced a new feature for PlayStation VR2: controller-free hand tracking.

The demo, which quickly made its way to social media, showed users participating in a mini-game using hand gestures instead of traditional controllers.

What The Demo Shows

In the demo, the system tracks the user’s hand movements and gestures, with no controllers involved.

According to Eurogamer, the text accompanying the demo explained that the hand tracking technology “tracks the position and posture” of the hands, and it operates at 60 fps with “low latency.”

Sony also mentioned that the system can recognize 12 different gestures. This feature is now available with the latest SDK for PlayStation 5.

Why This Matters For PS VR2

PS VR2 has not previously offered hand tracking, and this new demo gives users a glimpse into what that could mean for future VR experiences.

While systems like the Meta Quest 2 and 3 already offer hand tracking as a standard feature, this is a first for PlayStation VR2.

Sony hasn't provided details on when this feature will be available to PS VR2 owners or how it will be integrated into games, but the demo suggests it could be a valuable addition to the platform.
