Steve Jobs Might've Hated The Apple Pencil

The latest Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) event kicked off earlier this afternoon, and fanboys are already psyched up.

The festivities started with a look at the Apple Watch and some new features introduced to WatchOS before the new iPad Pro was presented. Then, a third gadget was introduced: the Apple Pencil.

What? A Pencil?

Many might be wondering: why would Apple make a pencil?

Well, of course this is not a regular pencil, it’s a stylus, which helps the iPad detect position and process touch data faster. Phil Schiller, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, qualified the Apple Pencil as being “absolutely amazing.”

Steve Jobs might disagree.

As seen above, back in 2007, Jobs commented on the stylus. “We don’t want to carry around a mouse...who wants a stylus? You have to get him, and put him away… you lose him… Nobody wants a stylus! So, let’s not use a stylus.”

His solution: “We are going to use the best pointing device in the world. We are going to use a pointing device that we are all born with –we are born with ten, we are going to use our fingers.”

Srini Sundararajan’s View

Benzinga contacted Srini Sundararajan of Summit Research for some comments on the event. The expert stated that, the “iPad Pro is good for a short term pop in iPad sales, which have not been good for the last few quarters. Hopefully, for longer term it will enhance further corporate adoption of the iPad.”

When questioned about the Airstrip, he said he thinks it is “more intriguing in terms of long term potential. It will help Apple watch sales. Apple watch needs a reason for pick up in sales and this could serve as a reason. So far, wearable health monitoring has not been that successful but hopefully Apple can change that. “
