Google Chromecast Almost Doubles Apple TV Sales
Sales of Chromecast from Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL)'s Google have surpassed Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) TV during the first quarter, according to the recent data from IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS).
IHS said Apple TV shipped 1.7 million units versus Google pushing 3.2 million Chromecasts to market.
"We anticipate that this reversal will persist," Merrick Kingston, principal analyst-connected home, at IHS Technology said in a statement.
"Since the introduction of the fourth-generation Apple TV, Apple and Google have pursued vastly different strategies."
Kingston said the price difference between the two products have played a huge rule in sales favoring Chromecast. Notably, Apple TV comes at $149, while Chromecast sells for $35.
Kingston said the "Apple TV has inexorably been shuttled into the segment's top end," while Chromecast, is "a veritable bargain."
IHS noted that Apple TV is a premium product for iOS users who are "intrinsically attracted to Apple's singular user-interface." On the other hand, Chromecast naturally complements portable Android devices and "offers a no-frills casting experience that obviates the very need for a user-interface."
