Sony's New Handheld Device, Formerly Project Q, Unveiled As PlayStation Portal

Sony Group Corp (NYSE: SONY) officially unveiled its new handheld device, previously known as Project Q, as the PlayStation Portal.

The device, now called the PlayStation Portal, serves as a "remote player" and comes with an 8-inch screen that can show clear images in 1080p resolution and smooth motion at 60 frames per second, IGN reported.

Sony confirmed the PlayStation Portal will cost $199.99 and will be available later this year.

Interestingly, the abbreviation "PSP" for PlayStation Portal is the same as Sony's earlier handheld gaming console, the PlayStation Portable, which was first launched in 2004. However, the two devices have different purposes.

While the PSP was a dedicated gaming console, the Portal is designed to let PS5 players enjoy their favorite games on the go.

The PlayStation Portal expands on Sony's existing remote-play feature. This means you can play your PS4 or PS5 games on your mobile device while you're away.

Previously, the most common way to use this feature was through a remote play app on smartphones. This method was a bit complicated when trying to play games outside the home and worked better for playing at home.
