PS5 Drops 8K Tag: Is 8K Gaming A Fading Dream?

Sony Group Corp. (NYSE:SONY) has apparently removed the prominent “8K” tag from PlayStation 5 (PS5) boxes

As observed by Digital Foundry’s John Linneman, the new packaging now only shows features like 4K/120 fps and HDR.

Linneman humorously commented on Twitter: “So they apparently removed the 8K from the box on PS5s? Ha ha, that’s pretty funny and should have been done years ago.”

He added: “It’s pretty obvious that not only is 8K not suitable for these machines (aside from The Touryst) but 8K displays are not desirable.”

Moreover, IGN confirmed that the 8K tag is also absent from PS5 boxes on the PlayStation Direct website. Prior to the PS5 launch in 2020, Sony had stated that the console was compatible with 8K displays and would support up to 8K resolutions with future updates and compatible software.

However, since then, there has been minimal support for 8K titles, with only one game, The Touryst, being notable. Additionally, the market adoption of 8K TVs hasn’t reached a level where prioritizing 8K support for consoles is necessary.

It’s worth noting that Sony wasn’t alone in highlighting 8K capabilities in 2020; Microsoft also promoted 8K support for the Xbox Series X.

However, Xbox head Phil Spencer cautioned that 8K is more of an “aspirational technology” and suggested that widespread adoption in video games is still years away, if it ever becomes standard.
