UPS, National Geographic, Acer, and Others Hacked
A Turkish hacker group calling themselves TurkGuvenligi have claimed responsibility for a number of high-profile attacks that occurred earlier today. Websites including UPS.com, vodafone.com, acer.com, telegraph.co.uk, nationalgeographic.com, and theregister.co.uk were all attacked earlier Sunday evening and defaced with a splash screen similar to the one above.
It might be interesting to note that all of these domains are registered under the same company, NetNames. This has lead many to believe that the hackers actually used a DNS attack to redirect users to a splash screen, rather than hack each individual site itself.
At this time, it appears most of the sites affected by this attack have at least somewhat recovered. With that said, if we are truly dealing with a DNS attack here, it could take up to 72 hours before everyone can view the actual website once again.
In addition, the hacker group declared today, September 4, "World Hackers Day" (and we can see why).
TurkGuvenligi seem to have taken responsibility for a total of 186 attacks on websites, including some other high-profile ones last month.
