Elon Musk's Twitter Sparks Chaos With Major Media Label Changes

Twitter has removed "state-affiliated" and "government-funded" labels from several high-profile media accounts. The changes were implemented on Friday and affected accounts such as the BBC, Russia's RT, and NPR in the US. Twitter faced backlash from media outlets over how their accounts were being described, with many suspending activity on the platform. Several news organizations complained that the "government-funded" label was inaccurate. The BBC also criticized Twitter after being given a "government-funded" instead of a "publicly funded" label. Twitter owner Elon Musk later amended the BBC's label, stating that the platform was "trying to be accurate". The labels were originally introduced to highlight accounts linked to state media or government officials, particularly from China and Russia.
