Jeff Bezos-Backed Anthropic CEO Predicts AI Will Surpass Human Intelligence By 2027, But Warns To 'Watch Out' For 'Negative Consequences'

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Tuesday made a bold prediction, stating that artificial intelligence (AI) could outperform human intelligence within the next two to three years.

What Happened: In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal in Davos, Switzerland, Amodei revealed that Anthropic is struggling to secure adequate computing power to meet the growing demand for its generative AI chatbot, Claude. Over the past year — and particularly in the last three months — demand has surged beyond the company's current computing capacity.

"The surge in demand we've seen over the last year, and particularly in the last three months, has overwhelmed our ability to provide the needed compute," he said.

Despite these challenges, Amodei assured users that the situation would improve, leading to reduced rate limits for the Claude chatbot. He also expressed optimism that Anthropic could have more than a million chips supporting its AI technology by 2026.

The startup, which saw its revenue grow tenfold last year, is actively competing in Silicon Valley’s race to create the world’s most powerful AI technology. Earlier this month, it was reported that Anthropic, the AI startup behind "Claude" backed by Jeff Bezos, is in advanced discussions to secure $2 billion in funding at a $60 billion valuation.

Meanwhile, Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has been a significant backer of Anthropic, committing $4 billion in November.

The CEO also shared that Anthropic is preparing to roll out more advanced models in the coming months. The company aims to enhance Claude with features such as web integration, two-way voice functionality, and improved memory capabilities to better recall user information and past conversations.

While recognizing the potential positive impacts of this rapid progress in AI, Amodei also warned about the need to be aware of the possible negative consequences. "The positive consequences are going to be great," Amodei said.

"The negative consequences we also will have to watch out for. I think progress is as fast as people think it is."

Why It Matters: Amodei’s prediction aligns with the views of other tech leaders. Elon Musk had earlier forecasted that AI could outsmart humans by 2025 and surpass humanity’s collective intelligence by 2029. Musk’s prediction was based on the rapid advancement of AI, a trend evident in the recent developments at Anthropic.

Moreover, Musk had also predicted that AI would surpass doctors and lawyers after OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 outperformed medical professionals in diagnosing illnesses.

In November, Anthropic also announced a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services and Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PLTR). This collaboration aims to provide its Claude A.I. models to U.S. defense and intelligence agencies. The partnership underscores a growing trend where AI companies are increasingly aligning with government sectors to leverage their technologies for national security purposes.
