Elon Musk's Tesla Indonesia Plans Should Be Taken With A Grain Of Salt: Here's Why

Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) may soon announce a battery material factory in Indonesia, according to Indonesian officials. However, this news should be approached cautiously and taken “with a grain of salt,” Electrek reports.

Senior Minister Luhut Pandjaitan disclosed his meeting with Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, in San Francisco. He stated Musk’s intention to establish a factory in Indonesia, hinting at an upcoming announcement.

Earlier, Indonesian officials had made similar claims about Tesla’s investments in the country, which didn’t materialize.

In 2020, reports surfaced about Tesla’s possible nickel venture in Indonesia, a major nickel producer. Musk had previously urged mining companies to boost nickel production, a key component of battery cells for electric vehicles.

Despite the ambiguity, there have been instances of Tesla’s interest in Indonesia. In 2022, a Tesla group visited Indonesia for government discussions, and Musk met with President Joko Widodo.

The company’s actual plans for the country remain unclear, and circulating rumors have varied significantly.
