November ETF Stats: First Outflows Since April
There were 1,376 U.S.-listed exchange-traded products with a combined $1.06 trillion in assets under management (AUM) at the end of November, according to the latest monthly statistics from the National Stock Exchange.
ETFs and ETNs had net outflows of $238 million, marking the first month of net outflows since April. Year-to-date total net cash inflows are now about $101.4 billion ETFs and ETNs. ETF/ETN notional trading volume during November 2011 totaled $1.7 trillion, representing 34% of all U.S. equity trading volume, NSX said.
BlackRock's (NYSE: BLK) iShares, State Street's (NYSE: STT) SSgA unit and Vanguard combined for about $881.7 billion in AUM across 388 funds. SSgA and iShares saw their AUM total falls from October while Vanguard added almost $3 billion in AUM month-over-month.
Other major ETF issuers seeing outflows in November were Invesco's (NYSE: IVZ) PowerShares, ProShares, Deutsche Bank (NYSE: DB), WisdomTree (Nasdaq: WETF), Rydex and Direxion.
Of the 12 largest U.S. ETF issuers, only Vanguard, Charles Schwab (NYSE: SCHW) and Van Eck's Market Vectors unit gained AUM last month.
Notable AUM gainers included Pimco, AdvisorShares Northern Trust (Nasdaq: NTRS) and Russell Investments.
The ten largest U.S.-listed ETFs as ranked by assets are the SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY), the SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD), Vanguard MSCI Emerging Markets (NYSE: VWO), iShares MSCI EAFE Index Fund (NYSE: EFA), iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index Fund (NYSE: EEM), iShares MSCI EAFE Index Fund (NYSE: IVV), PowerShares QQQ (Nasdaq: QQQ), iShares Barclays TIPS Bond ETF (NYSE: TIP), Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (NYSE: VTI) and the iShares iBoxx $ Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (NYSE: LQD).
