Get Ready To Grow Cannabis At Home On July 1, Connecticut Regulators Release Guidelines

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) released guidelines for growing cannabis at home.

Beginning July 1, adults 21 and over can grow cannabis in their homes. Adults can grow up to three mature and three immature plants, with a maximum of 12 per household, reported News 8.

However, the DCP emphasized that individuals who choose to grow cannabis must adhere to all existing laws and regulations in Connecticut, which includes cultivating in a locked and secured area not visible to the public.

DCP Commissioner Bryan T. Cafferelli stressed the importance of employing safe gardening practices. “Plants should also be kept indoors, out of reach and out of sight from children and pets.”

Responsible Consumption Practices

In addition to the guidelines for growing cannabis, the DCP stresses responsible consumption practices. Cannabis products should be stored in child-proof packaging and kept locked in a secure area.

“We want to make sure the product is locked that’s something that is really important to us is keeping it out of the hands of youth we want to make sure the product is secure especially once it is harvested because that’s when it will have most of the active ingredients," said Rodrick J. Marriott, director of the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection Drug Control Division.

Connecticut legalized adult-use cannabis sales on January 10, 2023; growing cannabis at home is an extension of those regulations. The DCP encourages responsible use and provides resources for information on responsible adult cannabis use, addiction, and health risks.
