Kansas Senate President's Nod To Medical Marijuana: Is One Of America's Last Total Ban States Turning A New Leaf?

In a recent interview with KCUR, Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson expressed his willingness to consider legalizing medical marijuana, although he remains opposed to recreational cannabis.

Last year, Masterson opposed a similar bill, fearing it was a step towards full legalization.

The new stance somewhat aligns with growing public support in Kansas for cannabis legalization; a recent Fort Hays State University survey showed that 67.2% of Kansans favor legalizing recreational marijuana.

Despite this, Kansas remains one of the few states where marijuana is entirely illegal.

The upcoming legislative session may see renewed debate on this issue, reflecting a shift in public opinion and political attitudes. 

As of December 2023, the states where cannabis remains fully illegal are Idaho, Kansas, South Carolina and Wyoming.
