NPD: Google's Android is Now Top-Selling Mobile OS (GOOG)
The NPD Group is reporting Wednesday that Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android mobile operating system was the top-selling OS in the second quarter. 33 percent of phones sold during the period had Android.
The NPD Group, a leading market research company, is reporting that for the first time since the fourth quarter of 2007, Research in Motion's (NASDAQ: RIMM) BlackBerry fell to second position, as Android took the lead among operating systems in handsets sold to U.S. consumers. Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone came in at 22%.
"For the second consecutive quarter, Android handsets have shown strong but slowing sell-through market share gains among U.S. consumers," said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD. "While the Google-developed OS took market share from RIM, Apple's iOS saw a small gain this quarter on the strength of the iPhone 4 launch."
Shares of Google are up 3% today, to $504.56. Research in Motion is down 3.75% Wednesday, to $53.44. Apple shares are up slightly, to $262.77.
