Crypto Stored In Old Wallets Are At Risk Based On This Cybersecurity Firm's Data

Cybersecurity firm Unciphered revealed information about a vulnerability that it says can affect wallets generated by BitcoinJS.

What Happened: While Unciphered was trying to retrieve a Bitcoin wallet, it found a potential issue called "Randstorm.”

It will mainly impact crypto wallets that were generated using web browsers from 2011 to 2015.

After the recent $100-million Poloniex hack, this is another cybersecurity threat that could affect the crypto industry on a larger scale.

Unciphered quantifies around $2.1 billion in crypto assets that will be impacted.

Why It Matters: Dogecoin, Litecoin, and Zcash wallets could be vulnerable to the attack.

Multiple blockchains and projects are also reportedly at risk.

While many of the users have been notified of the problem, the security company suggests transferring assets to wallets generated more recently. It states, “If you are an individual who has generated a self-custody wallet using a web browser before 2016, you should consider moving your funds to a more recently created wallet generated by trusted software.”

BitcoinJS is a package for the browser-based generation of cryptocurrency wallets, as well as products and projects built from this software, as stated on its website.
