Re/Code Executive Editor Explains Why It's Going To 'Take A While' For Apple Watch To Be A Success

While brokerages and analysts on the Street are busy toppling previous estimates with their own sales number of Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ: AAPL) Watch in the first year, some experts believe that the Apple Watch isn’t going to be as big a success as it is being made out to be.

Walt Mossberg, Re/code co-executive editor, is one among them. Mossberg was on CNBC Wednesday to discuss why he thinks the Watch is not going to be an immediate success.

"This all assumes the execution is right. Let's assume it's a great execution and the thing really works and so I think the first thing that will happen is the Apple hardcore loyalists will probably sell out a large number, a relatively large number of them in the first weekend. This is the pattern with Apple that you are very familiar with," Mossberg said.

"Then I think, it'll attract some other people, it will do okay, but I don’t think, I think people have this expectation that Apple products always have a kind of hockey stick thing where it's kind of a little bit flat just for a short while and then it just zooms upward," he said.

Mossberg continued, "If you look back in the history of iPod, iPhone, these things were not immediate giant blockbuster sellers and I guess it’s going to take a while on the Watch and I frankly, I don’t think, by the way, that the inexpensive one is going to come late, but I do think that people, even the the inexpensive one is $350 and I do think the more expensive ones are going to be premium fashion products and we don't really have a lot of experience with knowing how that's going to go."
