Thune Expected To Make Decision On 2012 Prez Run Soon
Sen. John Thune (R-SD), the man responsible for vanquishing then Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle in 2004, is expected to make a decision on 2012 run for the White House soon.
In an interview with Politico, Thune said he'll "fish or cut bait soon" and noted that recent changes to his fundraising don't mean anything. Thune has garnered the support of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
In the recent history of presidential politics it is rare to see two sitting senators run for the White House at the same time, but that was the case in 2008 when then Sen. Obama beat Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), though Thune noted to Politico it would be tough to run for president and hold down his Senate post.
Politico also reports that former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, the current U.S. ambassador to China, is also leaning toward running for the GOP presidential nomination.
