Shares of Smithfield Foods Inc (NYSE: SFD) gained about 2.5% after the company reported its Q3 net income at $202.6 million, or $1.21 per share, versus $37.3 million, or $0.22 per share, in the year-earlier period. The company's adjusted earnings came in at $0.84 per share. SFD's sales rose to $3.19 billion from $2.88 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.69 per share on sales of $3.13 billion.

Shares of China Integrated Energy Inc (NASDAQ: CBEH) gained about 5% after the company reported its Q4 earnings at $0.39 per share on revenue of $118.0 million. However, analysts had been expecting earnings of $0.34 per share on revenue of $116.05 million. The company projects FY11 net income at $72.2 million on revenue of $588.1 million. However, analysts were estimating FY11 revenue at $545.97 million.

The US dollar rose after a higher-than-expected rise in first-time jobless claims for the latest week. US trade deficit also reached its highest level in January. Against the greenback, the euro dropped 0.7120% to $1.3805, down from $1.3811 before the data. The dollar index (DXY) rose 0.65% to 77.22, up from 77.177 before the data.
