Terror Continues: Japan Hit With Another Earthquake Monday
The aftershocks continued in Japan on Monday, as an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 hit near Tokyo. An advisory for a one-meter tsunami was issued after the quake.
Japan's economy and infrastructure have been overwhelmed since the first March earthquake and tsunami, which killed thousands.
According to a Reuters report, "Separately, Japan announced plans to extend the evacuation zone around its crippled nuclear plant because of high radiation levels, local media reported on Monday, with engineers no closer to regaining control of six reactors hit by a giant tsunami one month ago."
Japan's Nikkei Index finished down 0.5% Monday, to 9,719.
The March 11 9.0 magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami brutally hit Japn's northeast coast, leaving more than 25,000 dead or missing.
The Reuters report notes that "Engineers at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi plant north of Tokyo said on Sunday they were no closer to restoring the plant's cooling system which is critical if overheated fuel rods are to be cooled and the six reactors brought under control. They are hoping to stop pumping radioactive water into the ocean on Monday, days later than planned."
The dollar is trading lower against the Japanese Yen this morning, to 84.56.
