Microsoft Also Was In Talks to Buy Motorola Mobility Holdings - GigaOM

Motorola Mobility (NYSE: MMI) was in takeover talks with several companies, including Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), according to GigaOM. Microsoft wanted Motorola's patent portfolio to enable it to target Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android operating system. It was Microsoft's involvement that lead to Google bidding for Motorola and its huge patent portfolio.
