$1.7 Million Bounty Placed on Gaddafi's Head as Fighting Continues in Libya

Share:

Fresh off the victory over Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's Tripoli compound, rebel forces in Libya continued to battle against Libyan loyalists Thursday.

Pockets of violence popped up throughout the capitol city today, as the hunt for Gaddafi waged on. Rebels, represented by the National Transitional Council (NTC), have also offered a bounty of nearly $2 million for the leader's capture.

"The end will only come when he's captured, dead or alive," said Mustafa Abdel Jalil, who heads the group.

According to a Reuters report, "After rebel forces overran Gaddafi's fortified Tripoli compound and trashed symbols of his 42-year rule, scattered loyalist fighters and snipers fought last-ditch battles in pockets across the city. Rebels also reported fighting deep in the desert and a standoff around Gaddafi's home town."

Gaddafi's long-lived reign over Libya showed no obvious signs Thursday, as the Colonel was still no where to be found. While it's widely believed that he was in Tripoli recently, there are no confirmed reports of his whereabouts.

The faltering of his 42-year leadership didn't appear to sway Gaddafi in a radio address to loyalists.

"I have been out a bit in Tripoli discreetly, without being seen by people, and ... I did not feel that Tripoli was in danger," Gadhafi said.

The United States is expected Thursday to call for a vote by the U.N. Security Council over the possible un-freezing of money frozen in foreign banks.
