Is LG Building a Revolutionary iPhone 5 Display?

Share:

LG unveiled a brand-new five-inch screen this week that (on paper) dwarfs the old-school Retina Display. And it could be coming to an iPhone 5 near you.

According to Cult of Mac, the display features a jaw-dropping 1920x1080 resolution and 440 pixels per inch -- a huge increase over the iPhone 4S' display, which sports a 960x640 resolution and 326 pixels per inch.

LG has not announced which smartphones will come equipped with its new display. However, the tech giant is one of many companies that is reportedly working with Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) on the upcoming iPhone 5.

All rumors indicate that Apple will refrain from building a smartphone with a five-inch screen, but that doesn't mean that LG's technology won't make it into the new device. We could see a similar degree of visual power packed into whatever display the company is building for Apple (assuming it is working with the Mac maker, of course).

Last week, numerous reports suggested that Sony (NYSE: SNE) would lead the charge in iPhone 5 display manufacturing, providing a unique opportunity for the struggling Japanese electronics maker. It could also provide a unique opportunity for Apple to outdo itself. Say what you want about PS Vita, but there's no denying that it features the most gorgeous screen of any handheld device released this year. Only the third-generation iPad, whose Retina Display dwarfs the one featured in the iPhone 4S, can compare.
