Google in Talks to Create Prescription Lenses, Designs for Google Glass

Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG) highly-anticipated Goolge Glass will be available to individual's whose eyesight's might not be 20/20 vision.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that the search engine is in talks with VSP Global, a nationwide vision benefits provider that also makes frames and lenses. Google wants to see VSP Global create special prescription lenses that is compatible with Glass' not so conventional style and frame.

The discussions appear to be in the early stages with VSP Global, who operates a network of 30,000 eye doctors and 60 million people enrolled in VSP's workplace and individual vision plans.

A prescription Glass is likely to become a reality because of the benefits Glass can bring to the user. “Down the road I think this technology is going to blow up,” according to Matt Alpert, an optometrist who sits on VSP's board.

Alpert was also an early tester in Glass and feels that “as soon as apps are developed that are relevant for your world, it will start to take off.”

Google is capitalizing on Alpert's rationale and has recently released a new kit for software developers, providing access to more of Glass' features.

Separately, TheVerge.com reported that Rochester Optical has been in talks with Google executives to develop prescription lens support for Glass.

“Sergey [Brin] dropped this on us in 2012 at I/O,” according to Tim Moore, director of research at Rochester Optical.

To date Google has not announced an official partnership with either firm to further develop a prescription version of Glass.
