Hard-Hitter Cabrera To Accept $248 Million Contract Extension

Share:

According to CBSSports.com, Detroit Tiger Miguel Cabrera is expected to sign the most expensive long-term contract in sports history.

With two years left on Cabrera's contract, the Tigers and 'Miggy' are in an agreement for an extension. The new contract is to be worth $248 million guaranteed over the next eight years, for a record $292 million ten year commitment. CBSSports.com added that a $30 million vesting options for tentative years 11 and 12, could bring the total salary to $352 million.

Miguel Cabrera has been playing on his eight-year, $152 million contract with the Detroit Tigers to expire after the 2015 season. The hard hitter was traded to the Tigers in December 2007 following a five-year run with the Miami Marlins.

In the winter, the Tigers and Rangers swapped Prince Fielder and Ian Kinsler. The Tigers will use some of the money of the trade to sign long-term deals with Cabrera and Max Scherzer. Scherzer turned down the $144 million six year deal.

The Detroit Tigers Opening Day is March 31, 2014. The Tigers will take on the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park at 1:05 PM (EST).
