Weekly Highlights: iPhone 6 Production, Fire TV Announcement, Google Troubles And More

One key iPhone 6 component could go into production very soon.

The device has not been officially unveiled, but the word on the street is that a number of suppliers -- including Sharp and Japan Display -- are getting ready to start producing screens for the new device.

Production could begin early next month.

Amazon Prime got a boost of publicity this week when Amazon introduced its first set-top box, Fire TV.

Small, compact and three times more powerful than an Apple TV, Fire TV is a familiar device with one very unique feature: voice search.

It also features Android game support, which could help it stand out from the crowd.

Fire TV may be capable of playing games, including those developed by well-known companies like Electronic Arts and Ubisoft.

But Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter was not impressed.

"It's a faster Roku box for the same price," he told Benzinga.

"Not enough 'must have' features to justify a switch, [and] the game content is a nonevent."

Fire TV received a lot of attention from the press, but there were an unusual number of important industry watchers who didn't seem to take notice.

In the hours after the Amazon event, three different analysts told Benzinga that they had not yet looked at the Fire TV.

If this had been an Apple device, it would have been a whole other story.

Can a search engine giant trademark any word it wants?

Google thought so, and set out to prove it when it requested a trademark for its augmented reality project.

That request has not been fulfilled, however, indicating that other companies may be able to use the "Glass" name.

WhatsApp, the multi-billion-dollar startup that Facebook recently acquired, could have had an IPO.

"Just like Facebook could go public, WhatsApp could [have gone] public," Guy Turner, Managing Director at Hyde Park Venture Partners, told Benzinga.

"There's no reason it couldn't go public. Whether it was immediately viable, I don't know.

"I don't know how much revenue they were doing and I don't know if they were effectively driving recurring revenue or if they had a high churn rate -- all these kinds of things that you would consider.

"But it seems [that] in the long run, it could [have been] viable if they continue to grow fast, etc."
