YouTube Viewers Are Increasingly Mobile
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, during the first night of re/code's Code/Mobile event, said that about 50 percent of YouTube views are now coming from a mobile phone or tablet, an increase from 40 percent from the last time YouTube commented. This highlights the ever-growing importance of a mobile presence in the marketplace. She also said that the site is growing 50 percent each year in terms of watch time.
Wojcicki went on to say “Mobile is super important. I think it's important for every business right now.”
Besides growth, she also talked about exploring new subscription services, with an ad-free service being one option.
”YouTube right now is ad-supported, which is great because it has enabled us to scale to a billion users; but there's going to be a point where people don't want to see the ads.”
Google Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL), which owns YouTube, has been exploring the launch of an ad-free service for some time. It is estimated that YouTube accounts for roughly 9.7 percent of Google's overall revenue.
