ComScore: 31% Of Consumers Still Rate Economic Condition As 'Poor'

comScore updated its third-quarter findings for the U.S. Online Retail Economy and issued some fourth quarter commentary in a blog post on Thursday.

Third-Quarter Highlights

  • Total Digital Commerce accelerated to 14 percent year-over-year.
  • Digital Commerce continues to take share away from brick-and-mortar stores.
  • Consumer sentiment is improving, however 31 percent of consumers still rate their economic condition as "poor."
  • Free shipping offers continues to become a vital selling point for online retailers.

Fourth-Quarter Commentary

  • Growth in online spending in the fourth quarter is projected at a "cautiously optimistic" 16 percent rate.
  • eCommerce originating from a desktop is expected to rise by 14 percent.
  • eCommerce originating from a mobile device is expected to rise by 25 percent.
  • The "5 S's" playing a vital role in retailers' holiday success: Short calendar, Social commerce, Smartphone apps, Sit-back shopping, Showrooming.
