Apple To Hire Journalists For Apple News Service

Share:

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) is hiring journalists for its Apple News service set to replace Apple Newsstand.

The company wants candidates with more than five years of "newsroom experience" able to "recognize original, compelling stories unlikely to be identified by algorithms," according to a help-wanted ad on the company's recruitment website.

Ken Doctor, an analyst with Newsonomics, told the Financial Times that other companies like Flipboard and Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) have hired journalists.

"Apple hasn't done it, so it's a departure, but it's not a surprising departure," Doctor said. "To do curated distribution you either use algorithms, like Google News, or you use people."

News coverage by Apple may create conflicts of interest when the company becomes the news, according to The Guardian.

Human rights issues in Chinese factories, iPhone antenna issues, misfiring mapping software, free U2 albums, child labor and privacy issues are all examples of Apple making recent headlines "in ways the company would not have enjoyed," the Guardian said.

"As the world's most valuable corporation, they can't and shouldn't be trusted to present well-rounded coverage on many important topics," Techmeme‘s founder Gabe Rivera told 9to5mac, which may have first spotted the help wanted ad.
