Why Didn't Google+ Make It As A Social Network?

On Monday, Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) announced that it would do away with requiring users to set up a Google+ account in order to access the company's other services.

In an effort boost the popularity of Google+, the company began requiring users to create an account in order to do things like comment on YouTube videos or use Hangouts. However, after proving unsuccessful, the company said it will focus on using Google+ to connect users with specific interests.

Unable To Find A User Base

Google+ was introduced as Google's response to Facebook Inc (NASDAQ: FB)'s rapidly growing popularity. While other rival sites like Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) were able to gain traction after Facebook's introduction, Google+ never caught on with the masses.

What Happened?

There are many theories as to why Google+ never made it as a popular social media site. One major reason, was the user experience.

Google+ required users to re-enter their information and reorganize things like their photos and user bio. As the majority of those interested in social media were unwilling to go through that process again, Google+ was unable to woo new users.

Another concern was the fact that Google+ didn't offer any unique benefits. The site itself was similar to what users could find on Facebook, and thus they were not interested in switching.

Future?

Google hasn't completely given up on its Plus service just yet. The company intends to continue running the site, but will focus on creating connections that center on similar interests.

Google is planning to build the site out using streams, photos and sharing; rather than positioning the site as a way to bridge all of the Google's services.
