General Motors Is Exploring Mobileye's Advanced Mapping For OnStar

General Motors Company (NYSE: GM) is at the forefront of vehicle technology and autonomous cars this year.

The company on Tuesday announced that it is looking into new mapping technology from Mobileye NV (NYSE: MBLY), which leverages crowd-sourced real-time data collected by OnStar for precise localization and high-definition lane data that supports fully autonomous driving.

The latest news caused both companies' shares to rise in pre-market hours on Tuesday, but both have since sold off. Mobileye recently traded at $37.82, down 5.3 percent.

Co-Founder, Chairman and Chief Technical Officer of Mobileye, Amnon Shashua stated, "Cameras are the most natural sensors for creating maps because they are already available in most new car models as part of the trend toward growing driver assistance deployment."

GM currently uses Mobileye software on cameras. The software is being implemented to support existing safety technologies such as GM's forward collision alert. GM last collaborated on camera technology with Mobileye back in 2007 with lane departure warning systems.

Ultimately, the new service would deliver the understanding for self-driving cars of distinguishing between moving and stationary objects in real-time.

"Creating and updating maps using on-board camera technology supplies the missing link between onboard sensing and the requirement for full redundancy to enable safe autonomous driving," said Shashua.

In 2015, GM sold an estimated 3.3 million vehicles in the United States.
