Netflix Goes Global, Enters 130 Countries

Shares of Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) spiked higher early Wednesday afternoon after the company announced it will launch its service globally.

Netflix confirmed in a press release it will simultaneously bring its network to more than 130 new countries across the world. The initial announcement was made during a keynote presentation by Reed Hastings, the company's CEO, at the Consumer Electronics Show 2016.

Netflix's rollout will not yet be available in the Chinese market, but the company did note it "continues to explore options" to enter the Chinese market.

Netflix also added Arabic, Korean, Simplified and Traditional Chinese to the 17 languages it already supports.

"Today you are witnessing the birth of a new global Internet TV network," said Hastings in the company's press release. "With this launch, consumers around the world -- from Singapore to St. Petersburg, from San Francisco to Sao Paulo -- will be able to enjoy TV shows and movies simultaneously -- no more waiting. With the help of the Internet, we are putting power in consumers' hands to watch whenever, wherever and on whatever device."

Shares traded recently at $113.98, up 5.9 percent on the day.
