'Zootopia' Passes $100 Million In Just 8 Days; How Does It Compare To The Biggest Animated Films?

Walt Disney Co (NYSE: DIS)'s "Zootopia" was the top draw at the box office for the second weekend in a row. The animated movie earned an estimated $50 million, bringing its total to $142 million.

The film breezed past the $100 million mark in only eight days, making it one of the most successful openings in animated movie history. But how does the movie stack up against the top animated films of all times?

According to BoxOfficeMojo, it took one of the top grossing animated films of all time, Disney’s "Frozen," 13 days to reach the $100 million mark. "Frozen" ended up grossing a total of $400.7 million dollars. Disney and its shareholders would be thrilled if "Zootopia" hits anything near that high water mark.

While "Zootopia" is off to a fast start for an animated movie, it is not the fastest to the $100 million mark. It took Disney's "Inside Out" just four days to hit $100 million last year. Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA)'s "Despicable Me 2" also reached $100 million in four days in 2013. Back in 2010, Disney's "Toy Story 3" reached $100 million in only three days before finishing with a total gross of $415.0 million, tops among all animated films.
