Global Semi Sales Down ~2% In 2015

According to a report by IHS, global semiconductor revenues fell by 2 percent in 2015.

In a report published on Monday, IHS noted quarterly growth for the global semiconductor sector was "weak" throughout every quarter of 2015. In fact, the year started off poor when the market fell 8.9 percent over the prior quarter, marking the worst sequential quarterly decline dating back to the fourth quarter of 2008 and first quarter of 2009.

Total global revenue across the sector fell to $347.3 billion in 2015 from $354.3 billion in the prior year. The decline in revenue marks a reverse from 2014's 8.3 percent growth and 2013's 6.4 percent growth.

"Weak results last year signal the beginning of what is expected to be a three-year period of declining to stagnant growth for semiconductor revenues," said Dale Ford, vice president and chief analyst at IHS Technology. "Anemic end-market demand in the major segments of wireless communications, data processing and consumer electronics will hobble semiconductor growth during this time."

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) ranked No. 1 in worldwide revenue in 2015 at $51.42 billion, marking a 2.9 percent year-over-year gain.

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) experienced the worst year-over-year decline in revenue as 2015 sales plunged 27.3 percent from a year ago to $3.92 billion.
