IMAX Touts Success Of Marvel's 'Captain America' Opening In China
IMAX Corporation (USA) (NYSE: IMAX) announced over the weekend that the release of Walt Disney Co (NYSE: DIS)'s "Captain America: Civil War" achieved a record-level debut in China.
IMAX said the film grossed $10 million across 283 IMAX screens in China. The company added that the film is on pace to overtake the current best three-day opening weekend film of all time in China; that distinction is currently held by "Transformers: Age of Extinction."
IMAX added that the film grossed ¥21.7 million ($3.3 million) in China on Friday, which sets a new mainland record for that day in IMAX. The previous record was also held by "Transformers: Age of Extinction," which saw ¥21.0 million in box office sales.
"The unparalleled opening success of Marvel's Captain America: Civil War in IMAX in China is a true testament to the film's incredibly talented and hard-working filmmakers, led by our friends Joe and Anthony Russo, as well as the spot-on marketing and distribution efforts of the entire Disney team and IMAX in China," said Greg Foster, senior executive vice president, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. "Chinese audiences have demonstrated their excitement for the stories, characters and action within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly when seen in the best possible format — in IMAX."
