How To 'Fix' Governments: Just Look To Yelp And Google
Americans want government services to be as easily accessible as Yelp Inc (NYSE: YELP) or Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG), a Wall Street Journal report said, citing Neil Kleiman, a professor of policy at New York University.
The ease with which the public can go to Yelp for instantaneous restaurant reviews and recommendations, or google business information is a key to success, and may be the key to making government services such as paying taxes and applying for a license renewal more user friendly and publicly accepted.
According to the report, Matt Lira, senior adviser for House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, said, "The gap between the government's information technology and the private sector's [information technology] has grown larger than ever."
Unfortunately, the government is unlikely to catch up soon.
The report said that in 2015, the Government Accountability Office "estimated that about 25 percent of the Federal Government's 738 major IT investments – projected to cost a total of $42 billion – were in danger of significant delays or cost overruns."
Executive Director of 18F Aaron Snow commented, "The way we transform government services is by transforming the practices that create those services [...] And the way to do that is to change the culture that creates those services."
