Robin Wright The Latest Actress To Speak Out For Equal Pay
Robin Wright captivated fans with her performance as Claire Underwood on the hit Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) original "House of Cards."
Wright's character is the wife of Francis Underwood, portrayed by the show's main star, Kevin Spacey.
Wright made international headlines this week when she said that it was unfair for her pay to fall short of what Spacey earned. She noted that her character is far from a minor role and is in fact an equal to Spacey's character.
"It was a perfect paradigm. There are very few films or TV shows where the male, the patriarch, and the matriarch are equal. And they are in 'House of Cards,'" Wright said on Tuesday during an event at the Rockefeller Foundation.
Wright added that her character was more popular than Spacey's character for a period time.
"So I capitalized on that moment," she added. "I was like, 'You better pay me or I'm going to go public.'"
"And they did."
Wright joins a growing list of Hollywood actresses who are becoming increasingly vocal in the issue of equal pay. Notable A-lister Jennifer Lawrence may have started the movement when she spoke up about her pay falling short of her male counterparts on "American Hustle."
