Despite Falling 1 Tony Short Of Record, 'Hamilton' Success Is Unprecedented
The hit Broadway musical “Hamilton” fell one Tony Award short of the all-time record held by "The Producers" by racking in an impressive 11 Tonys on Sunday night. Despite this "miss," “Hamilton” has already broken a number of box office records and is unquestionably one of the biggest Broadway hits of all time.
“Hamilton” has been breaking Broadway records literally from day one. Back in November, a production spokesperson revealed that the musical had logged a record $57 million in advanced ticket sales.
The cast album from the musical debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Broadway cast album list, but its No. 3 debut on the rap album list was uncharted territory for a Broadway musical. The album also opened at No. 9 on the Billboard Top 200, the highest –charting cast recording in more than 50 years.
Despite the fact that the show is performed on a medium-sized theater, the show's nightly sell-outs have it regularly leading a record-setting Broadway box office season on a week-to-week basis.
After securing a record 16 Tony nominations, “Hamilton” fell one award short of the record this weekend, but there’s no question the show is off to an unprecedented start on Broadway.
