ABC's 'Sunday Fun & Games' Night Top Ratings In Debut
ABC is playing a new type of game this summer as the Walt Disney Co (NYSE: DIS)-owned network is banking heavily on game shows and unscripted programming to populate its offseason. The network's first big test of that programming came Sunday with its "Fun & Games" Sunday night block and based on the first round of ratings, they won over viewers.
The three-hour lineup includes revivals of ultra-popular classic game shows, all with a celebrity hook. The lone returnee from last year kicked off the night as the always reliable "Celebrity Family Feud" saw 7.8 million viewers and an 18-49 demo rating of 1.5.
Following the Steve Harvey-hosted "Feud" was the debut of "The $100,000 Pyramid" with new ABC go-to host Michael Strahan. The affable former football star built on his lead-in with 8 million viewers and a 1.7 demo.
Concluding the night was the Alec Baldwin-emceed "Match Game" which kept the same wry humor and cheeky metaphors of the 1970's original. The show slipped to 6.7 million viewers and a 1.5 demo rating, but handily beat all other competition.
All together, ABC won the night and set itself up in good position for repeat success this summer.
