You Can Watch Wimbledon Live On Twitter

Twitter Inc (NYSE: TWTR)'s push into broadcasting live sports events continues to gain momentum as the social media platform will offer viewers the chance to watch a live stream of Wimbledon.

Twitter appears to be test-running its live sports broadcasting with the tennis event. Recode cited a company spokesperson who said the live stream represents an "extremely early and incomplete test experience" and that it will be "making lots of improvements before we launch in its final form."

In other words, Recode suggested Twitter wants to "get the kinks out now" before its deal with the NFL to live stream Thursday evening matches kicks in. After all, tennis' popularity is no match for NFL as Thursday night games drew more than twice as many viewers as the Wimbledon men's final did last year.

Twitter plans on selling advertisements when it streams NFL matches this fall, but it's not known the deal the company struck to broadcast the tennis tournament.

What is known is that Twitter wants to be a major player in live sporting events. The company is not only active in talking with professional sporting leagues, but it's also talking with broadcast and cable network partners.
