After Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA)-owned Universal's record showing in 2015, the year 2016 belonged to Walt Disney Co (NYSE: DIS). With Disney behind five of the 10 highest grossing movies of the year, it has raked in over $7 billion at the global box office this year, according to Statista. This compares to the previous record of $6.9 billion in worldwide annual ticket sales earned by Universal.

Disney's better performing movie releases this year include "Captain America: Civil War," "Finding Dory," "Zootopia," "The Jungle Book," "Doctor Strange" and its latest Star Wars flick "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."
