Here Are The 5 Biggest Box Office Years By Dollar Amount
After Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA)-owned Universal's record showing in 2015, the year 2016 belonged to Walt Disney Co (NYSE: DIS). With Disney behind five of the 10 highest grossing movies of the year, it has raked in over $7 billion at the global box office this year, according to Statista. This compares to the previous record of $6.9 billion in worldwide annual ticket sales earned by Universal.
Disney's better performing movie releases this year include "Captain America: Civil War," "Finding Dory," "Zootopia," "The Jungle Book," "Doctor Strange" and its latest Star Wars flick "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." Even as records are still being broken, Benzinga looked at five of the biggest domestic box office years in terms of dollar amount.

- 2015: The year 2015 remains on top of the list with $11.10 billion in annual ticket sales domestically.
- 2012: 2012 boasted numbers of $10.959 billion.
- 2013: Closely following was the year 2013, when domestic grosses amounted to $10.955 billion.
- 2009: This year takes the fourth position, grossing $10.82 billion.
- 2014: With annual ticket sales of $10.435 billion, the year 2014 takes the fifth slot.
With a week remaining in 2016, the year has thus far generated annual ticket sales of $9.78 billion.
