Ready, Set, Swap? Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos Could Sell The Washington Post To Buy The Washington Commanders

First, he snatched up NFL's Thursday Night rights, and now he's trying to buy an entire team — but he's going to have to break up with the Washington Post to do so.

What To Know: Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN) founder and big-time billionaire Jeff Bezos is looking to buy the Washington Commanders, according to a New York Post report.

The Amazon founder intends to sell the Washington Post in order to purchase the football club, per a source with direct knowledge of the situation.

Last week, Bezos, who purchased the Washington Post for $250 million 10 years ago, sparked fears of impending layoffs during an "awkward" meeting with newsroom staff, but a source close to the situation reportedly said Bezos told senior staff members that he did not intend to put the Post up for sale. 

The report indicates that multiple sources have heard rumors that the Washington Post is for sale. 

“I think Bezos’ people could go to [Commanders owner] Dan [Snyder] and say as a gesture of goodwill, 'We are selling the paper.' I think that would go a long way with Dan," a source familiar with the matter reportedly said.

Why It Matters: The report indicates that Bezos has not "made it perfectly clear" that he intends to sell the Post, but this isn't the first time rumors have surfaced. 

Less than a month after Bezos stepped down from his role at the helm of Amazon, reports that Bezos was exploring a buyout of the then Washington Football Team circled the exiting CEO.

All the way back in 2019, CBS Sports reported Bezos was interested in buying an NFL team and noted that he had "strong support within the league to eventually join their ranks."

However, several reports from last week noted that the Commanders were taking bids from prospective buyers and Bezos was not among the potential suitors.

“Not only was I told Bezos didn’t submit a bid, I’ve had people tell me the Snyder family has absolutely no interest in selling to Bezos,” JP Finlay, host of "Washington Football Talk," said via tweet last week.

The Commanders were in playoff contention toward the end of the 2022 regular season, but ultimately finished 8-8-1 at the bottom of the NFC East. The Commanders will have the 16th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
