Tesla's Giga Mexico Won't Come Up In 'Record Time' After All: Here's Why

Tesla Inc‘s (NASDAQ:TSLA) Gigafactory in Mexico will reportedly take 12-15 months to build despite reports that it will come up in record time.

What Happened: Nuevo León Governor Samuel García Sepúlveda said that Tesla’s Gigafactory in Mexico will take more than a year to build, reported Milenio. The governor was speaking in an interview with Pedro Gamboa on Milenio Television.

It was reported in March that the factory in Mexico will likely come up in record time beating the nine-month record set by the Gigafactory in Shanghai.

However, as Tesla wishes to build an economic model at the factory, it would require a whole new production line that would occupy a large space, the governor said, as reported by Milenio.

The governor further added that the plant might be the largest plant for any automaker in the world. Tesla’s investment will bring in further investment and soon Nuevo Leon would be the world hub of electromobility, the governor said, as per the report.

Tesla confirmed at its investor day in March that its next Gigafactory would come up in Nuevo Leon, which shares a small part of its state border with Texas. The first cars from the upcoming plant are expected to roll out in 2024.
