Apple Vs Microsoft: Safari Overtakes Edge In Browser Battle, But An Old Rival Still Dominates

Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) Safari overtook Microsoft Corp’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Edge in the fight for the top desktop browser, but a third player seems to be unquestionably winning the war. 

What Happened: According to StatCounter, in April 2023, Apple’s Safari browser overtook Microsoft’s Edge, the successor to Internet Explorer, with an 11.87% global market share, slightly higher than Edge’s 11%.

However, despite Apple’s lead over Microsoft in the browser competition, both are significantly behind Alphabet Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google Chrome, which dominates the market with a staggering 66.13% global market share as of last month. 

Following the aforementioned three contenders come Mozilla Firefox and Opera Limited’s (NASDAQ:OPRA) namesake internet browser with 5.65% and 3.09% of the market share. 

Why It’s Important: It was previously reported that Microsoft had incorporated artificial intelligence into its Edge browser and Bing search engine, leveraging the same cutting-edge technology that OpenAI utilized in developing chatGPT. 

Microsoft’s decision to take this step came in the backdrop of Google and Chrome’s dominance in search and browser segments, respectively. While in terms of search engine development, Microsoft Bing might have given Google Bard a run for their money. However, it appears that in the browsing segment, Apple reaped the benefit.
