How A Quick-Thinking 7th Grader Saved His School Bus From Disaster: 'A Change-The-World Kind Of Lesson'

The danger associated with the addictive nature of phones and tablets goes beyond the destructive content users have access to on their devices, which more than 60 school children recently experienced when their school bus driver fell unconscious in Warren, Michigan.

When seventh grader Dillon Reeves noticed his bus driver had passed out behind the wheel, he was able to guide the vehicle to safety without incident.

Notably, the Lois E. Carter Middle School student was the only passenger in the vehicle who wasn’t on his phone, according to CBS.

"It's a very powerful lesson, maybe a change-the-world kind of lesson," the boy’s father, Steve, told the outlet.

What Happened: While on his way home from school, Reeves was looking at the window and noticed the bus swerving. The student jumped up from his seat and took the steering wheel from the bus driver, who was suffering from a medical emergency. He hit the brake and was able to bring the bus to a stop.

While other students were distracted by their phones, Reeves — who doesn't own a phone — was aware of his surroundings and had learned how to stop the bus by watching the driver operate the vehicle each day.

"What else are you going to do when you don't have a phone?" Reeves' dad told CBS. "You're going to look at people, you're going to notice stuff. You're going to look out the window."
