Box CEO Compares AI With Mobiles In Mid-2000s — And Elon Musk Couldn't Agree More

Box, Inc. (NYSE:BOX) CEO Aaron Levie drew a striking analogy between the current state of artificial intelligence and the mobile industry in the mid-2000s, gaining Elon Musk’s agreement. 

What Happened: While generative AI platforms like ChatGPT’s comparison with the invention of the internet have sparked interest among tech enthusiasts, Levie’s noteworthy comparison has prompted a response from Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) and SpaceX CEO himself.

Levie took to Twitter and drew a parallel between the current AI trend and the mid-2000s mobile industry, highlighting the dominant presence of iPhones and Android-powered devices during that era.

However, in the present AI landscape, numerous AI systems are constantly evolving and upgrading instead of just a couple of major players, making the time exciting and “wild.” 

Musk responded to Levie’s tweet with affirmation, saying, “Wild times indeed.” 

Why It’s Important: Musk’s pioneering venture, xAI, made its grand entrance last week, introducing a bold mission to explore the fundamental nature of the cosmos. 

The tech billionaire is also one of the co-founders of OpenAI, the company behind chatGPT. It was earlier reported that Musk wanted to run OpenAI himself, but fellow co-founders, including Sam Altman, turned down his proposal.

Musk has also repeatedly made scathing remarks about Microsoft Corporation’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) involvement with chatGPT-parent, saying that the tech giant gained “exclusive access to the entire OpenAI codebase” on the back of their investment in the company.
