Kremlin Spokesperson Suggests Russia May Skip Elections Next Year: 'It's Obvious That Putin Will Be Re-elected'
Dmitry Peskov, a spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin, stated that the elections are unnecessary and that Putin will be reelected, Business Insider reports.
In a recent interview with the New York Times, Peskov described the Russian presidential election as “not really democracy” but a “costly bureaucracy.”
“Mr. Putin will be reelected next year with more than 90% of the vote,” he was quoted.
Following the article’s publication, Peskov claimed he was misquoted and attempted to clarify his remarks.
He told Russia’s RBK news outlet the same sentiment regarding the 2024 elections, adding that election “theoretically” doesn’t need to happen because “it’s obvious that Putin will be reelected.”
The potential 2024 election also coincides with Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which Putin has termed a “special military operation.”
