Mike Pence's Game Plan For Upcoming GOP Debate: 'I'm Just Going To Be Me'

Former Vice President Mike Pence said his strategy for the upcoming Republican presidential primary debate is to make an impact by simply being himself.

What Happened: Pence during his ABC News interview with Jonathan Karl on “This Week” on Sunday said he aims to “breakthrough” in the debate using his experience and personal authenticity.

"I've had a little bit of experience with nationally televised debates. But it's – it's different with a group on stage," he said.

"And, look, I'm – I'm just going to be me. I mean I feel like I've been preparing for this first Republican presidential debate my whole life."

Pence referenced his reputation among voters, saying, “Most people know me as that – that loyal vice president who fought alongside President Trump until the day came that my oath to the Constitution required me to stand apart."

Regarding the uncertainty of former President Donald Trump‘s presence at the debate, Pence expressed optimism that Trump would attend, stating, "One thing I realized about him is it’s not over till it’s over. So I’m actually still hoping he shows up."

Why it Matters: Pence has been subject to immense criticism from Trump supporters. The former vice president was recently mocked online after he released a video addressing rising energy prices, in which he appeared to be pumping gas into his pickup truck. Observers were quick to point out that Pence did not insert a credit card, select a fuel grade or squeeze the pump handle, leading to widespread ridicule.

He was also heckled by the pro-Trump supporters at the Iowa State Fair, who called him a "traitor."

Meanwhile, a recent poll revealed that Trump now holds his largest lead over his GOP rivals despite his recent legal troubles. Trump held 62% support among the Republican voters, while Pence ranked fourth with mere 5% support.
