Over Half Of Americans Think Artificial Intelligence Could Spread Misinformation For 2024 Election Results: Do Trump Or Biden Supporters See AI As Bigger Risk?

American registered voters will head to the polls in November 2024 to select the winner of the highly anticipated race for U.S. president.

Among the potential issues facing voters will be election integrity, an item that became a hot topic after the 2020 election. The rise of artificial intelligence could put election integrity back into the spotlight once again.

What Happened: The rise of artificial intelligence in 2023 has been one of the biggest storylines and could become a key storyline for the 2024 presidential election.

A survey conducted by Morning Consult and Axios showed that half of Americans (53%) worry misinformation could be spread by artificial intelligence on who wins the 2024 election. Around one-third of those surveyed said they will be less trusting in election results because of artificial intelligence.

The survey found that the share of respondents who said artificial intelligence would decrease their trust in the 2024 election was split by party with the following results:

Voted for Donald Trump: 47% said AI decreases their trust

Voted for Joe Biden: 27% said AI decreases their trust

Other: 39% said AI decreases their trust.

Supporters of Trump were almost twice as likely to say artificial intelligence would decrease their trust in the 2024 election results.

The survey also found that 35% of voters said artificial intelligence will decrease trust in election advertising. For this question, Trump voters were more likely (42%) to mistrust election advertising due to AI, compared to 33% of Biden voters.

Axios and Morning Consult asked numerous questions about the 2024 election and artificial intelligence and saw around 3% say they are “very concerned” about the development of artificial intelligence.

Respondents were also mixed with how to improve artificial intelligence with 33% saying that AI can’t be regulated effectively. Around a quarter of all respondents said that creating a new federal agency to oversee AI was the best option.

Only 35% of Democrats in the poll said they have trust in Biden to oversee AI regulation. Forty percent of Republicans said they have trust in Trump to oversee AI regulation.

Why It’s Important: The survey of voters came as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) will host several top leaders in the artificial intelligence sector including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman, Bill Gates and more in a closed-door forum to discuss what should be done for regulation.

Benzinga recently reported Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL) rolled out a new policy that will require election advertisers to disclose if any artificial intelligence tools were used in the creation of the ads.

The move was seen as a way for Google to commit to artificial intelligence transparency and election transparency for political advertising.

Social media is expected to play a big role in the 2024 election and could also be a place where voters search for results. The rise of AI to generate headlines and stories could see social media platforms set policies well in advance of the election to make sure fake headlines and stories don’t end up going viral around election time.
