SpaceX CEO Elon Musk Mocks This Rival CEO For Slow Transition To Reusability

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Sunday mocked rival satellite launch provider Rocket Lab USA Inc‘s (NASDAQ:RKLB) CEO Peter Beck for his comments on rocket reusability.

What Happened: Rocket Lab launched with a pre-flown engine last month.

Rocket Lab launched a pre-flown 3D-printed Rutherford engine on its "We love the nightlife" mission, which employed its recovery-configured Electron rocket. The rocket was launched from New Zealand on Aug. 24 at 11:45 am NZST and deployed a satellite for American space tech company Capella.

“This reusable thing seems to work…. Going to fly 9 reused engines on an upcoming mission,” Beck then wrote.

Musk responded to the comment on Sunday and wrote, “No kidding lol.”

Why It Matters: Musk has previously warned that rocket manufacturers must either go all-in on reusability or risk being obsolete.

“No one would buy a single-use airplane, car, or even bicycle! You'd need to tow another car just for the return trip,” Musk said. His SpaceX has been attempting to make its rockets wholly reusable to bring down spaceflight costs for years, with efforts dating back to 2015.
