Marjorie Taylor Greene Sounds Alarm Amid Turbulent Times For GOP After Kevin McCarthy Ousted: 'There's Not A Plan'

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said there is no clear plan for a successor following the historic ousting of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

What Happened: Greene expressed concern to the media about the lack of interest and support for any potential successor to McCarthy.

"No one has come forward and no one has shown any interest in running for speaker. No one has support in the conference like Kevin McCarthy does. So that's been my question the entire time is what's the plan, and there's not a plan, and I think that's the most concerning part about it," she said, reported The Wall Street Journal.

She said she expected McCarthy would try to run again for speaker.

Why It Matters: The ousting of McCarthy resulted from internal GOP discord and was initiated by Rep. Matt Gaetz in response to McCarthy's alleged cooperation with Democrats in preventing a government shutdown.

McCarthy’s allies, including MTG, showed a range of emotions after his removal from the third top office. Rep. Stephanie Bice (R-Okla.) wiped away tears with a tissue on the House floor while other Republican lawmakers privately vented in the halls to the media.

McCarthy’s ousting as speaker was the first time in history that the chamber had dethroned its leader in a no-confidence vote. Declaring the position of Speaker of the House as vacant is a rare event. The last known instance when speakership was declared vacant occurred in 1910 when Speaker Joseph Cannon announced the chair empty, even though it was against himself.

Following McCarthy’s removal, Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), a key McCarthy supporter, stepped in as acting speaker. McHenry has mandated former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to vacate her office at the Capitol by Wednesday.
