Kevin McCarthy Planted Seeds Of His Own Downfall Back In January When He Agreed For 'Motion To Vacate' Rule: Analysis

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy‘s unusual path to ascension involved numerous concessions, one of which might be the reason for his downfall as the House Speaker.

As reported by Business Insider, McCarthy’s speakership was won after a series of concessions to gain the support of Republican holdouts. This included agreeing to a rule that allows any single House member to file a “motion to vacate” to attempt to remove him from his seat.

Recently, Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz took advantage of this rule, filing a motion to start the process of removing McCarthy from his leadership position. This move came after McCarthy relied on congressional Democrats in September to temporarily fund the government.

The “motion to vacate” was approved by a majority in the House, comprised of the entire Democratic caucus and 11 Republicans. McCarthy was removed from the post and replaced with a temporary speaker until a new one was formally elected.

The new speaker will likely face significant challenges, given the tensions within the GOP and looming issues like a potential government shutdown and presidential impeachment proceedings.
